From Kildare to Louth: Growing a New Home for Need4Seed

There are some changes in life that happen quietly, and then there are the ones that involve moving house, moving a business, building new growing space and starting all over again!

For our family-run Irish vegetable seed business, Need4Seed, moving from Kildare to Louth was certainly one of the bigger adventures.

Need4Seed has always been about growing, gardening and, most importantly, helping people grow their own food. So when it came to creating our new home for the business, it seemed only right that we should start with the growing space.

And so began the construction of our new polytunnel.

A new beginning in Louth

Leaving Kildare behind was a big decision for our family. Kildare had been home, both personally and for the business, and moving meant leaving behind familiar surroundings and starting again in a new place.

But Louth has already given us something very special — space.

Space to grow. Space to experiment. Space to develop Need4Seed and, hopefully, create an even better place from which to share our love of growing vegetables with gardeners across Ireland.

Of course, before any seeds could be sown, there was plenty of work to do!

Building the new polytunnel

These photographs capture the early stages of that work.

What started as an open piece of ground gradually began to take shape. The fencing went in, the ground was prepared, and then came the framework for the new polytunnel.

There is something very satisfying about watching a growing space being built from scratch. At this stage, it doesn't look like much more than poles, fencing and muddy ground — but we could already picture what it would become.

A productive space filled with seedlings, plants and trays of vegetables.

And, of course, plenty of hard work!

The Irish weather also made sure we didn't get away without a challenge or two. Rain, wet grass and muddy ground became part of the construction process. Anyone who has tried to build or work outside in an Irish winter will know exactly what we mean!

From an empty field to a growing space

One of the things we love about growing vegetables is that everything starts with something small.

A seed.

You put it into the soil, give it the right conditions, look after it, and eventually something appears.

In many ways, this move feels a little like that.

The new Need4Seed location started with an idea and an empty space. Slowly, with plenty of work, it is beginning to take shape.

The polytunnel is more than just a structure. It is going to be an important part of the next chapter for our family business.

It will give us a dedicated space to grow, trial and develop, while also allowing us to continue doing what we enjoy most — encouraging people to grow their own vegetables.

A family project

Because Need4Seed is a family-run business, the move isn't simply a business decision. It is a family project too.

There are plenty of jobs involved in setting up a new location, and not all of them are glamorous!

There is fencing to put up, ground to prepare, equipment to move, structures to build and countless little jobs that seem to appear along the way.

But there is also something exciting about doing it together.

When you look back at photographs like these, you can see just how much can change in a relatively short time.

What looks like a muddy field today can become a productive growing space tomorrow.

Looking ahead

Standing in the new location and looking across the fields, it is easy to imagine what the future might look like.

More growing.

More seeds.

More vegetables.

More experiments.

And hopefully plenty of new gardeners discovering just how rewarding it can be to grow their own food.

The move from Kildare to Louth has been a big step for our family and for Need4Seed, but it also feels like the beginning of something new.

The polytunnel is just one part of that journey — but it is a pretty important one.

So these photographs are a little snapshot of where we started.

From the first posts going into the ground, to the framework taking shape, to the beginnings of our new growing space, this is the story of Need4Seed in its new home in Louth.

And as anyone who grows vegetables knows, the best part is seeing what happens next.
