Sowing:

Basil should be sown close to the surface with only a light covering of soil or compost as they need light to germinate. 

Sow approx 3 seeds per cell or directly in the ground when the conditions get warmer.

Basil seeds need heat to germinate to leave them in a warm sunny spot to grow. Basil will usually germinate within 7 days if the conditions are ideal. 

Harvesting:

Basil is usually ready to harvest within 4-6 weeks of planting and once it has about 4-6 sets of leaves.

Information:

Basil requires a well drained, nutrient rich soil that is consistently moist but not waterlogged so make sure to provide a good supply of compost.

It prefers soil ph of between 6 - 7.5.

Interestingly, basil likes warmth but not too much heat.

Make sure to pinch out flowers as they grow as this will turn the leaves bitter and encourages the plant to go to seed.

Nutritional Information:

The main nutrient from basil is Vitamin K which is contains aplenty which supports bones and blood circulation. It also possesses anti-bacterial properties which help fight against infection in the body. 

Fun Fact:

Basil has been used in previous times in both perfumes and to repel mosquitoes and is a relative of the mint family.
