Sowing:

Seeds should be sown approximately 1.5cm deep with just 1 seed per cell.

  

Harvesting:

Brussel sprouts are ready when the sprout head is 1-2 inches in diameter and when they have turned firm and green and before they turn yellow. To harvest you simply twist and break the sprout away from the plant

  

Information:

Brussel sprouts require a firm and very fertile soil.

Brussel sprouts will germinate between 7-12 days.

Brussel sprouts are a cool season crop and can withstand cooler temperatures.

Sowing can begin in February onwards for indoor planting or between April-May for outdoor planting.

Brussel sprouts require a sunny spot but also shelter from wind.

Soil should be firmly pressed around the stalks for support.

Brussel sprouts are a slow-grower and take between 26-31 weeks before they are ready to harvest.

Preferably do not plant sprouts in the same location as a brassica crop has grown in recent years.

The most common pests are cabbage root fly and cabbage caterpillars along with leatherjackets.

 

Nutritional Information:

Brussel sprouts contain Vitamin K which assists with blood clotting and are great for bone health. They are also high in Vitamin C and contain very few calories.

  

Fun Fact:

Brussel sprouts are named after Brussels in Belgium where they were grown in the 13th century, however the British consume the most amount of Brussel sprouts than any other country in Europe. Interestingly, the dislike for Brussel sprouts comes from a gene which causes the vegetable to taste bitter to some.
