Variety:
White Caraflex F1
Approx 50 seeds
Sowing:
Seeds should be planted approx. 1cm into the soil with 1-2 seeds per module.
Seedlings can be transferred approx. 6 weeks after sowing when they are showing several adult leaves.
Harvesting:
Cabbages can be harvested when they reach their appropriate size and the cabbage head is firm.
Information:
Cabbages can be grown all year round but each variety will dictate the optimal time for planting.
Cabbages prefer a firm, well drained and fertile soil.
Cabbages are hardy and are able to withstand frost but will benefit from additional compost or organic matter.
They need space to grow well and a good amount of sunlight (6 hours or more).
The main pests include cabbage root fly, cabbage white fly and cabbage white caterpillars. Using a fleece cover should protect your crop.
Clubroot can also be an issue when growing cabbage but getting the soil pH correct (6.5 – 6.8) usually prevents this.
Red cabbage varieties are usually used for pickling.
Sowing/harvesting cabbage depends on the variety you are growing as some types of cabbage are suited to summer and others are better as a winter crop. This however means cabbage can be grown all year long. Cabbage can be planted in spring, summer or in autumn/winter time.
Cabbage needs to be continually watered as it grows.
Nutritional Information:
Cabbage is a great source of Vitamin C (with just half a cup of cabbage giving you a third of your daily recommended intake) as well as folate and magnesium (which promotes a healthy sleep).
Fun Fact:
Cabbage leaves have been recommended and used by breastfeeding women as a prevention for breast engorgement and symptoms of mastitis.
