Sowing:
Seeds should be sown approximately 1.5cm deep with just 1 seed per cell.
Sowing generally occurs between March and April for a summer crop or May – June for a later crop.
Harvesting:
Cauliflowers can be harvested once the head is large and firm and before it starts to separate. Simply cut the stem taking a few leaves with the head.
Information:
Cauliflower require a rich fertile soil with a pH of between 6.5 and 6.8.
Cauliflowers can be challenging to grow due to its sensitivity to temperatures but the main trick is a consistently cool environment.
Cauliflowers prefer cool temperatures with high humidity and should be watered regularly.
Cauliflowers will take between 3-5 months to reach maturity.
The main pests are aphids, slug and snails and leaf hoppers
Nutritional Information:
Cauliflower is high in Vitamin C and folate. It is fat free and low in sodium and is a good source of antioxidants. It is high in choline which is vital for mood and memory.
Fun Fact:
Although they are not commonly consumed, the leaves of the cauliflower are also edible! As well as white, cauliflower also comes in orange, green and purple varieties. Cauliflower has become quite trendy in recent years providing an alternative to foods such as rice.
