Sowing:
Chicory can be grown either in seed trays at 1.5cm deep or directly into the soil from late spring around 15cm apart.
Seeds will germinate at around 5 - 10 days after sowing.
Harvesting:
Chicory will be ready to harvest the young leaves by about 30 days or when the plants reach 12 - 18 inches in height.
Information:
Chicory should be grown in well drained and reasonably fertile soil with a soil pH of 5.5 or more.
Chicory prefers full sun but it is cold-hardy and can withstand light frosts.
Common pests include aphids, caterpillars and slugs and snails.
Nutritional Information:
Chicory is made primarily of water and it contains fibre including inulin which acts as a prebiotic. It also contains Vitamins A and K. Chicory is a great food for your gut health as it stimulates your healthy gut bacteria.
Fun Fact:
Chicory root can be used as a caffeine free alternative to coffee and the plant generally is used for medicinal purposes as well as a food.
