Variety:

Latin: Coriandrum Sativum

Approx 200 seeds

Sowing:

Seeds should be planted approx. 1 cm deep with 1-2 per seed tray and it should be grown around 25-30cm apart.

Sowing can be done all year round if inside (in a pot) but if sowing outside ideally between March and June.

Harvesting:

Coriander is ready to harvest after about 4-6 weeks and when you can see the leaves have grown and taken shape regardless of their size. It is best to harvest the lower leaves first. Coriander is a "cut and come again" so you can continue taking the leaves as it grows.

Information:

Coriander will need a little bit of light to germinate so ensure a light layer of compost on the seed.

Coriander needs rich, moist but well draining soil with a ph between 6.2 - 6.8.

Coriander enjoys the sun but does appreciate some shade when it gets very hot or it will bolt. It grows well in the polytunnel but does very well, perhaps better in outdoor beds too.

Coriander has long tap roots and doesn't like its roots being disturbed. This means sowing directly into the soil and avoiding transplanting is preferable.

Coriander enjoys consistently moist soil and doesn't do well when watering is erratic.

Nutritional Information:

Coriander (aka cilantro) is nutrient dense, low calorie herb. It is rich in Vitamins A, C and K as well as iron and manganese depending on which part of the herb you are using.

Fun Fact:

This amazing herb serves two functions as both the leaves and seeds are used for different roles. Cilantro is often meant to refer to the green fresh leaves of the plant which contains the vitamins whereas coriander usually refers to the seeds which have a warm and spicy aroma packed with iron and manganese used in curries and other dishes. Both can be used and bring different nutrients to the dish.
