Harvesting:
Courgettes can be harvested at any stage once grown and best harvested when they are quite small (around 10cm long)
Information:
Courgettes prefer a fertile soil and it is recommended to add a compost or fertiliser to the soil around a week or two before starting. Keep courgettes well watered.
While courgettes are generally easy to grow, they should be protected from frost and strong winds.
Courgettes need heat and shelter so a propagator or a windowsill is helpful.
They should be planted around late May – early June in more favourable conditions and avoiding any frost.
Courgettes should be placed around 90cm apart.
Courgettes are large growing plants and will take up a lot of space.
Powdered mildew can be an issue. Make sure to keep your plants watered and this should prevent this occurring.
Nutritional Information:
Courgettes contain potassium which helps our muscles as well as Vitamin C and folic acid and are also high in anti-oxidants (with the highest levels found in the skin).
Fun Fact:
Courgette is also known as zucchini. Zucchini comes from the Italian “zucchini” which means “small squash” and the terms courgette also means “small squash” but in French.
