Sowing:
Garlic chives should be sown approx. 1cm deep in seed trays and 15-20cm apart if outdoors.
Garlic chives can take between 2-3 weeks to germinate. Garlic chives are slower to germinate than other chives.
Garlic chives can be sown inside in March or outside between March and the end of August.
Harvesting:
Garlic chives take around 80-90 days to be harvest ready.
Information:
Chives require fertile, well drained soil which is watered consistently.
Interestingly, the seed needs cool air to germinate however will require warmth in order to grow and cooler conditions will slow their growth.
Garlic chives are perennial but it is recommended to allow them to mature fully before you harvest them in their first year.
Garlic chives prefer a soil ph of between 6-7.
All parts of the plant are edible - both the leaves ands the beautiful white flowers they produce.
Nutritional Information:
Garlic Chives are rich in Vitamins A and C, but also rich in riboflavin, potassium, iron, thiamin, and beta carotene. They contain antioxidants and are an immune boosting plant.
Fun Fact:
Garlic chives were appreciated by the infamous Vincent Van Gogh and he painted Flowerpot with Garlic Chives in 1887 which is on display at a museum in Amsterdam.
