Variety:
Blauwgroene Herfst
Approx 150 seeds
Sowing:
Seeds should be sown approximately 1cm deep with 1-2 seeds per module.
If sowing outdoors sow in rows around 15cm apart.
Harvesting:
Leeks should be ready for harvesting between 120-150 days after sowing and when the base stalk is between 1-2 inches in diameter. Leeks loose their flavour the larger they get so don't let them grow too big.
Information:
Leeks prefer a sunny, well drained and fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
Leeks are a hardy low maintenance vegetable and are considered easy to grow.
Depending on the variety, sowing can take place between March - late April.
Leeks usually germinate between 2-3 weeks after sowing.
Pests include rust, leek moth and leak miners and caterpillars. An insect net can be used against pests but be careful that the crops get good circulation in the heat.
Nutritional Information:
Leeks are high in Vitamin A and antioxidants in particular flavonoids which have anti-inflammatory properties. They are also rich in Vitamin K which is linked to a reduction in the risk of osteoporosis.
Fun Fact:
Leeks can be poisonous to our four legged friends so keep them away from your cats and dogs as a precaution.
