Variety:
Mizuna
Approx. 500 seeds
Sowing:
Seeds can be sown outdoors from late Spring until late summer/early Autumn and should be sown 1cm deep either outdoors or in seed trays.
Seeds should be sown approximately 10-15cm apart.
Seeds will germinate around in around 7-10 days.
Harvesting:
Mizuna can be harvested either at around 3 weeks when the baby leaves (which have a milder flavor) show or the leaves can be left to mature and grow larger and harvest at around 6/8 weeks.
The best way to harvest Mizuna is the "cut and come again" method which simply means instead of harvesting the whole plant, take the outer leaves and leave the plant to keep growing.
Information:
Mizuna prefers a fertile well draining soil with a ph of between 6 - 7.5.
It is a hardy plant but needs to be kept watered as it can bolt if the soil is left to dry out.
Mizuna is ready to harvest from between 20-40 days after the plant germinates.
Mizuna tolerates cooler weather well making it a great choice for growing for a large portion of the year. However it does not do well in frost unless it's rather mature already. Equally it does not like when the weather is too hot either.
Mizuna grows very well in pots, containers or troughs making it a great choice for people with less garden space.
Pests rot watch for include aphids, slugs and snails and the flea beetle
Nutritional Information:
Mizuna is a low calorie vegetable that is high in folate and iron as well as Vitamins A, C and K. It assists with eye health and acts as an immunity booster.
Fun Fact:
Although Mizuna is a brassica it often acts as a lettuce alternative and can be eaten raw in salads or smoothies or cooked in dishes such as stir-fries. The name means "water greens" in Japanese.
