Sowing:

Seeds should be sown approximately 3cm deep with 1-3 seed per module cell.

Sowing can start between February/March - July for indoor growing and from May-June for a late season Autumn crop.

Harvesting:

Harvesting will depend on the vegetable you are looking for. Mangetout can be harvested before the peas start to form in their “casing”. Alternatively, if you are looking for peas, wait until the cases are swollen and firm before picking. Peas can be picked from the plant as they are ready.

Information:

Peas do grow well in most soil however they prefer a fertile soil with a pH between 6 – 7.5.

Peas need a sunny but cool area to grow and only require moderate watering (usually once a week will suffice once its not an overly hot day) and will be fine once the soil does not dry all the way out.

Seedlings generally germinate between 1-2 weeks.

Peas should be planted approximately 70cm between rows.

Peas will require supports such as chicken wire, netting and/or bamboo canes and its important to check your seed pack to see how high your crop will grow. It is important to have your supports in place early otherwise the crop will not develop well.

By “pinching out” the top of the plant, it will ensure shoots grow further down.

The main pests are aphids, caterpillars and cutworms. Birds can also be a pest but appropriate netting can solve this.

Nutritional Information:

Peas are high in complex carbohydrates like starch. They are full of Vitamin A and K and also contain thiamine which allows the body to use carbohydrates for energy and assists our metabolism.

Fun Fact:

Peas are part of the legume family. Peas were not always eaten while green and they used to be consumed when yellow which is when they ripened. Green peas are considered immaturely grown.
