Variety:
Esmee
Approx. 500 seeds
Sowing:
Rocket (also known as arugula) is best sown directly in the soil (between March and September) but can also be started in seed trays both approximately 1cm deep.
Seeds will germinate quickly and usually by day 7.
Harvesting:
Rockets can be harvested within about 4 - 6 weeks after germination. Leaves can be harvested while small and young or they can be left to mature to bigger leaves. Be sure not to leave it too late to harvest as leaves become bitter if left too long, especially in the heat.
Information:
Rocket should ideally be grown in moist, fertile and well draining soil with a pH of between 6 - 7. While these are the ideal conditions, rocket is a hardy plant and will adapt and grow in a lot of soils.
Rocket grows very well in pots, containers or troughs making it a great choice for people with less garden space.
Rocket grows well in both full sun and cooler temperatures but can bolt if it gets too hot so keep it well watered on sunny days.
Rocket is vulnerable to aphids, slugs and snails and caterpillars.
Nutritional Information:
Rocket is a low calorie leafy green food that is rich in Vitamins A, C and K as well as potassium, folate and calcium.
Fun Fact:
The Romans and Egyptians believed that rocket was a powerful aphrodisiac.
