Sowing:
Seeds should be sown individually approx. 5cm deep and around 20cm apart. Runner beans grow quickly and should be sown in pots and not modules or alternatively directly in the ground.
Seeds will germinate in about a week.
Seeds can be sown in pots from or they can be planted in the ground from May – July as they are frost sensitive.
Harvesting:
Harvesting will begin around mis summer (around 3 months after sowing) but runner beans need to be harvesting frequently and can be harvested right up to when it starts to frost. Pick your beans when they are slightly small as otherwise they will become stringy. Frequent harvesting encourages further growth.
Information:
Runner beans prefer a rich and fertile soil and should be watered regularly.
The roots of Runner beans go deeper than most vegetables (up to 45cm) however they can still be grown in pots without issue.
Runner beans can grow up to 10 ft high so a supporting apparatus such as a wigwam will be required.
Do not plant out the runner bean seedlings until any frost is gone.
Runner beans need a sunny spot but can be grown in partial shade.

Runner beans are high in fibre and folate and are a high protein food.

Georgia hosts an annual Green Bean Festival in July which celebrates the vegetable.
