Variety:
White Lisbon
Approx. 200 seeds
Sowing:
Spring Onion can be sown into modules with 5-10 seeds per cell around 1cm deep. Alternatively they can be sown directly outside from March - June and this variety can be successfully sown right into July - September too.
Harvesting:
Spring onions are generally ready to be harvested from between 8-12 weeks after sowing.
You can either harvest the entire onion or you can "cut and come again" by snipping the green parts as needed and the rest of the onion will continue to grow to be harvested on a different occasion.
Information:
Spring Onions aka Scallions prefer full sun (at least 6 hours per day) and rich loose and well draining soil with a soil pH of between 6.0 - 7.0.
Seedlings should be spaced approx. 15cm apart to allow room for growth.
Spring onions are hardy and tolerant of cooler conditions.
Soil should be kept consistently moist, but not waterlogged as otherwise the stems can turn woody. Water on the roots for best results.
Spring onions are perfect for successional sowing so you have a steady supply throughout the growing season. Sow a crop every 2-4 weeks depending on your level of consumption.
Nutritional Information:
Spring onions are low in calories and rich in Vitamins A, C and K for your immunity and heart health. They also contains allicin which reduces your blood pressure and lowers (bad) cholesterol.
Fun Fact:
Spring onions are the "teenagers" of the onion world and are consumed before they reach full onion maturity. They are native to Asia but grow all across the world. Eating parsley can help with onion breath after eating your scallions!
