Sowing:
Seeds should be sown approximately 2-3cm deep with 1 seed per module cell.
Sowing generally occurs between April - May and you should wait until after the last frost before planting outside.
Harvesting:
Sweet corn can he harvested once their tassels at the end have turned brown.
You can also peel back the husks and if the kernels release a milky fluid with slight pressure, this is a sign that they are ready.
Information:
Sweet Corn prefers a fertile, moist yet free-draining soil.
Sweet Corn prefers warmth and full sunshine and should be sheltered from the wind.
Sweet Corn benefits from companion planting and the "three sisters" method is recommended planting corn with beans and squash as these plants compliment each other's growth perfectly.
Sweet Corn can grown up to 2 metres tall so space is an important factor on where you choose to plant them.
If your Sweet Corn is not in a sheltered location, you may well need to provide a sturdy support such as a bamboo cane to avoid them being damaged.
Nutritional Information:
Sweet Corn is considered a carbohydrate source as well as being high in protein and fibre. It is a good source of Vitamin C and some B Vitamins.
Fun Fact:
Each ear of corn has around 800 kernels on it.
Sweet Corn while often considered a vegetable also falls into the category of being a grain as well.
