Variety:
Goldana
Approx. 400 seeds
Sowing:
Turnips are best sown into the soil directly as they do not transplant well. However if they are being sown in seed trays, one seed per module is best.
Sow the seeds approx 1-2cm inches in the soil and space them around 4 inches apart. Turnips will germinate at around 14 days.
Turnips can be sown in Spring between February - April and again for Autumn between July - August for a later crop. If sowing early then they would benefit from a fleece or cover.
Harvesting:
Turnips will be ready to harvest in around 10-12 weeks and they can be eaten between sizes of 5 - 10cm although they become sweeter the larger they become.
Turnips should be harvested in good time otherwise they can become woody in taste. Therefore succession sowing is recommended for optimal harvesting and to avoid waste.
Information:
Turnips need a rich and loose soil with a ph of between 6 - 7.5 and benefit from added compost. They should be kept well watered as roots can turn woody if they dry out but other than this are rather low maintenance crops.
Try to avoid planting turnips with other root vegetables as they are likely to compete for the same nutrients
Nutritional Information:
Turnips are a low calorie crop and high in fibre. They can be eaten raw or cooked. They are high in anti-oxidants, Vitamin C and K and calcium.
